Pilates is a method of movement created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, originally called Contrology. It was designed to improve strength, balance, and mobility through mindful, controlled exercises, focusing on quality of movement rather than quantity.
At its heart, Pilates connects mind and body. Joseph believed that true wellbeing comes from training both together, which is why the practice is built around core principles like concentration, control, precision, breath, and flow.
Unlike high-impact fitness styles, Pilates uses smaller, precise movements that build deep strength and stability. It can be practised on the mat or with specialised equipment, in group classes or private studio sessions, making it adaptable for everybody and every stage of life.
-
The beauty of Pilates is that it’s completely adaptable. Every movement can be scaled up or down in intensity, allowing us to meet you exactly where you are on any given day. Some days you might feel strong and ready to push yourself, and other days you might need gentler, restorative movement - both are perfectly valid.
This flexibility is what makes Pilates so inclusive. No matter your age, experience, fitness level, or any injuries you may be working with, the method can be tailored to support you. That’s why we say Pilates is truly for everybody, it’s about moving in a way that feels right for you.
-
If you’re new to Pilates, we recommend starting with our Foundations Flow classes. These sessions focus on building correct technique, core activation, and mindful movement, giving you the confidence to progress safely into our wider range of group classes.
Even if you’ve done Pilates before, Foundations Flow is a great way to get a feel for our teaching style and check in with your form.
For those who’d like extra support, or are interested in the other apparatus such as the reformer, our private studio sessions (often called Clinical Pilates) are the perfect option for a more personalised start.

Bookings are essential to secure your spot. Once you’ve purchased a class pack or Intro Offer, you can book directly through our website or via the Momence app (just download the app and select The Pilates Loft as your studio).

Comfort is key. We recommend breathable activewear (leggings, shorts, or pants with a t-shirt or singlet). Shoes aren’t needed, all classes are done in grip socks, which are required for hygiene and safety. If you don’t have a pair, we have plenty available to purchase in the studio.
A water bottle is also essential to keep you hydrated. You’re welcome to bring your own towel or any extra props if you like.
-
We understand that plans can change. If you’re unable to attend, please cancel at least 4 hours before your class. Cancellations made after this time, or if you don’t show up, will result in the loss of a class credit.
If you cancel within these timeframes, your class credit will go straight back onto your account. -

How do I get started with Studio Pilates?
Studio Pilates is one of the most personalised ways to experience Pilates. Working 1:1 with your instructor, or in a small group setting, you’ll follow a tailored program designed specifically for your body and your goals.
Often referred to as Clinical Pilates, private studio sessions are ideal if you’re recovering from injury, seeking specialised conditioning, or want extra support and guidance.
Ready to give it a try? Start your Studio journey with an Initial Consultation - a 1:1 session where we dive into your movement history, goals, and individual needs.
-
Studio Pilates is much like personal training, but with the precision and principles of Pilates at its core. Sessions are held privately or in small groups, using specialised apparatus to create programs tailored to your individual needs and goals, whether that’s recovery, everyday strength, or performance.
With a focus on quality of movement, Studio Pilates helps you build strength, stamina, balance, flexibility, and alignment in ways that matter most for your body. Many clients choose Studio Pilates for whole-body conditioning, cross-training, sport-specific goals, or to refine their Pilates skills, while others come for targeted rehabilitation and support.
Studio Pilates can be especially beneficial if you’re navigating pain, recovering from injury, or working with specific conditions. It’s also a supportive option during pregnancy and postnatal recovery.
-
Your first Studio session is booked as a Private 1:1 Studio appointment (Initial Consultation).
During this session, you’ll chat about your goals, your body, and what you’d like to gain from Pilates. You’ll also be introduced to the foundations of the Pilates method and how these principles apply to you personally. Before your appointment, we recommend checking our FAQs to see what to bring and wear. Please arrive about 10 minutes early so you have time to meet your instructor and see the studio.
-
You can book your session through our website or via the Momence app. Just look for the Appointments section to find available times.
Studio sessions are appointment-based, so if you can’t find a time that suits online, please get in touch and we’ll help you arrange one that works.
-
We understand things come up, but please note that Studio appointments require at least 12 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. This allows us enough time to offer your spot to another client.
Cancellations made with more than 12 hours’ notice will be credited back to your account. Late cancellations or no-shows will result in the loss of your appointment credit.
