Frequently asked questions

  • Pilates is a method of movement created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, originally called Contrology. It was designed to improve strength, balance, and mobility through mindful, controlled exercises, focusing on quality of movement rather than quantity.

At its heart, Pilates connects mind and body. Joseph believed that true wellbeing comes from training both together, which is why the practice is built around core principles like concentration, control, precision, breath, and flow.

Unlike high-impact fitness styles, Pilates uses smaller, precise movements that build deep strength and stability. It can be practised on the mat or with specialised equipment, in group classes or private studio sessions, making it adaptable for everybody and every stage of life.

  • The beauty of Pilates is that it’s completely adaptable. Every movement can be scaled up or down in intensity, allowing us to meet you exactly where you are on any given day. Some days you might feel strong and ready to push yourself, and other days you might need gentler, restorative movement - both are perfectly valid.

This flexibility is what makes Pilates so inclusive. No matter your age, experience, fitness level, or any injuries you may be working with, the method can be tailored to support you. That’s why we say Pilates is truly for everybody, it’s about moving in a way that feels right for you.

  • If you’re new to Pilates, we recommend starting with our Foundations Flow classes. These sessions focus on building correct technique, core activation, and mindful movement, giving you the confidence to progress safely into our wider range of group classes.

Even if you’ve done Pilates before, Foundations Flow is a great way to get a feel for our teaching style and check in with your form.

For those who’d like extra support, or are interested in the other apparatus such as the reformer, our private studio sessions (often called Clinical Pilates) are the perfect option for a more personalised start.

  • Bookings are essential to secure your spot. Once you’ve purchased a class pack or Intro Offer, you can book directly through our website or via the Momence app (just download the app and select The Pilates Loft as your studio).

For convenience, we recommend using the app to manage your schedule on the go. Make sure to take a moment to read our cancellation policy before booking your class.

  • Comfort is key. We recommend breathable activewear (leggings, shorts, or pants with a t-shirt or singlet). Shoes aren’t needed, all classes are done in grip socks, which are required for hygiene and safety. If you don’t have a pair, we have plenty available to purchase in the studio.

A water bottle is also essential to keep you hydrated. You’re welcome to bring your own towel or any extra props if you like.

  • We understand that plans can change. If you’re unable to attend, please cancel at least 4 hours before your class. Cancellations made after this time, or if you don’t show up, will result in the loss of that class credit.

If you cancel within these timeframes, your class credit will go straight back onto your account.

  • The Pilates Loft is located at Unit 6/1 Locke Lane, Ellenbrook WA 6069.

To respect our neighbours and their businesses, please don’t park on the premises for group classes between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, as these bays are reserved for neighbouring tenants during business hours.

Instead, you’ll find plenty of alternative options nearby:

    • Street parking along Comserv Loop and Locke Lane (just outside the service station).

    • Parking at the nearby shopping areas - only a short 5-minute walk to the studio.

For private 1:1 appointments, parking is available in front of the studio at any time of day.

  • There’s no one size fits all answer - it really depends on your lifestyle, budget, and goals. The most important thing is finding a routine you can commit to. Even one or two classes a week can make a difference, and if you can do more, you’ll feel the benefits even sooner. Whatever you choose, consistency is key, make a plan that works for you and try to stick with it.

  • Not at all! Pilates was actually created by a man, Joseph Pilates. While it’s often associated with women today, the method was designed for everyone.

Pilates is about building strength from the inside out, improving flexibility, balance, and control. The benefits go far beyond gender, professional athletes like footballers, swimmers, cyclists and runners all use Pilates to improve performance and prevent injury.

Whether you’re looking to complement your current training or build strength on its own, Pilates is for every body.

  • We don’t currently offer a creche facility, but we do run Mums & Bubs classes where your little one can join you in the studio. It’s a relaxed, supportive vibe, bub can be next to you on a blanket while you enjoy your workout.

A couple of things to note:

    • Prams can’t fit in the studio, so please bring a baby carrier and/or a blanket for your little one.

    • Our studio is upstairs and does not have a lift, so keep this in mind for access.

These classes are a lovely way to move your body while keeping your little one close.

  • Pilates is generally a safe, low-impact form of exercise during pregnancy, but not every class format is suitable. We always recommend checking with your healthcare provider before starting or continuing Pilates while pregnant.

At The Pilates Loft, many of our instructors have additional training in pregnancy and postnatal Pilates, and some have even continued their own practice through pregnancy. This means you’ll be supported with safe, effective modifications.

If you’re pregnant, we suggest starting with our Foundations Flow, Signature Mat, or Stretch & Flex classes, as these are the most pregnancy-friendly on our schedule. Alternatively, you can book a private appointment for more personalised support.

If you’ve never done Pilates before, a private session or two before joining group classes is the best way to assess your individual needs and set you up for success.

  • Yes, with a few important guidelines. We recommend waiting at least 8 weeks after giving birth before returning to classes, and it’s always best to check in with a Women’s Health Physiotherapist & your GP first.

When you’re ready to return, take it slow and be kind to yourself, your body has done something incredible, and easing back into movement is all about support, not pressure.

To start, we suggest our Foundations Flow, Signature Mat, or Stretch & Flex classes, as these are the most gentle and adaptable options.

Private sessions are also available if you’d like more individual guidance.
